Honestly, Red Riding Hood Was Rotten!: The Story of Little Red Riding Hood As Told by the Wolf

Honestly, Little Red Riding Hood Was Rotten!:
The Story of Little Red Riding Hood As Told By The Wolf

Picture Window Books – Capstone

His Review:

"I like the pictures a lot, especially the wolf. I love the pictures of the wolf! It was a funny book. The wolf loves apples and knows all the kinds. I think Red Riding Hood should have taken some apples with her to give him. I think when we hike we should take apples. If Red Riding Hood and Granny gave the wolf something to eat instead of thinking of themselves maybe he would not have eaten them."

My Review:

My grandson is autistic. He knows a lot about being able to name all the types of things that interest him. So that the wolf could name the apples was no surprise. He had no problem relating to that. He reads a lot so he was able to sit through it. I liked the story myself. I thought it was a very cute picture book. The illustrations were awesome. Even though the wolf eats Granny and Red Riding Hood my grandson did not get scared. He was able to understand the wolf only ate them because he had nothing else to eat. We enjoyed reading this together. I loved hearing him laugh out loud at the wolf. There is a teaching element at
the back of the book. He was able and interested in answering most of the questions.

We gave Honestly, Red Riding Hood Was Rotten  4 of 5 stars

Back-to-School Rules

Back To School Rules by
Carolrhoda Picture Books  - Lerner Publishing Group
Expected publication date: 9/01/2011

My Review:

My grandson
has been attending school for about 2 years. As returning to school is coming up I thought this would be an awesome pick to get ready. I was not disappointed. We loved the book. Percy is off to school and has some rules to share. There are 10 simple rules of what Not to do. Yes they are told from a negative point which may put some people off. I myself prefer to give positive rules of behavior. Not everyone does though. So we all have to deal with both types of rules in daily life. The text was told in rhyme and the rules, though negative, were fun. The illustrations were delightful. My 4 year old understood every one of them. He was not put off by the No's and Don'ts. They were all rules he knew and he was comfortable with them. Rules were presented in a fun way and were understood; which is exactly what I think the author set out to do.

His Review:

"I like the pictures. My favorite were the kids hanging from the ceiling and flying through the air. The rules are important. But they forgot one. The most important one. You don't hit the teacher. No smacking her butt or kicking. They really don't like that. I know all about that. I really like this book. I  need to read it every night so I am ready for school.I think teacher's should read it on the first day."

We gave Back To school Rules 4 of 5 stars

Witches

Witches by Cheryl Christian, Wish Williams (Illustrator)
Star Bright Books
Expected publication date 8/15/2011

My Review:

What a delightful book! One of the best Halloween picture books I have seen. The illustrations were awesome and all inclusive. Having a special needs child this was a pleasant surprise. I really appreciated that the illustrator included special needs children and portrayed them accurately as "normal" children. The text was fun and had the children mixing up potions and daring each other to try them. The author and illustrator were able to capture all the magic and fun of Halloween night without the scary side you often see in Halloween books. The one down side I had is that it looks like it is only available in softcover. I would love it if Star Bright Books made this into a hardcover. The book is a keeper!

His Review:

"I love it! The pictures are really fun! I like the cats. The children are like kids in my class. The children in the book are having fun just like we do. I want to have a party like the one in this book. Then we can all go trick or treating. That was my favorite part. I hope my library gets this book! Let's read it again."

We gave Witches 5 of 5 stars!

These books were provided by Net Galley. The books were made available to me in the hope that I would review them, but I was not obligated to do so, nor did I promise positive reviews.

From Tuesday Teaser
Buzz was probably on the lookout for a strange man and I had my eye on the strange car driving slowly down the street in front of the diner. That skull on the dash seemed to watch me as it passed. The loud roar had caught my attention. Like an engine revving at race day in Talladega, the sound echoed in my head. Muted chrome and dull gray flashed by in a blur. The noise from the hot rod faded as it drove down the street, passing another car and fading from sight. Seeing the same car more than once in a town the size of Memphis was unlikely.

No doubt he had used a fake ID to enter the place. He couldn’t have been over eighteen. The girl beside him scowled, smacked him in the head, then leaned against the bubbling jukebox and took a sip of blood from her martini glass. The routine of her motions let me know it wasn’t the first time he’d ogled the opposite sex in her presence.

Q. Talk about the book that most changed or influenced your life (was it a book that turned you from an average to avid reader, did it help you deal with a particularly difficult situation, does it bring you comfort every time you read it?).

Wow. I have read so many good books throughout my life it is hard to choose! My first book I learned to read on my own was Barney the Beagle by Jean Bethell. It would be the book that started me off reading. Then later I fell in love with Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montegomery, Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank and Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Lately books I think have influenced me are The Stoning of Soraya M. by Freidoune Sahebjam and Blue by Lou Aronica. I know I am missing so many more. Books are a part of who I am.

Review Book

Lord of the Vampires (Royal House of Shadows Series)
Lord of The Vampires By Gena Showalter is the first book in the sizzling hot new series Royal House of Shadows brought to you by Harlequin Nocturne. Expected publication date is September 1, 2011. I received this book for review from the publisher.

From GoodReads:

Once upon a time…the Blood Sorcerer vanquished the kingdom of Elden.
To save their children, the queen scattered them to safety and the king filled them with vengeance.
Only a magical timepiece connects the four royal heirs…and time is running out.…
Nicolai the Vampire was renowned for his virility, but in a twist of fate "The Dark Seducer" had become a sex slave in the kingdom of Delfina—stripped of his precious timepiece and his memory. All that remained was a primal need for freedom, revenge—and the only woman who could help him.
In her dreams, a wanton vampire called to Jane Parker, drawing her to his dark sexuality and his magical realm.
But for a human, all was not a fairy tale in Delfina. Jane was the key to Nicolai's memory…but exploiting her meant dooming the only mortal he craved.

My Review

I need a new Kindle. Why you ask. Because Gena Showalter scorched mine with Lord of the Vampires! This steamy romance is filled with drama and heart pounding action. This book is HOT!  Gena Showalter has written a superbly intoxicating novel that will have you either not daring to breathe or unable to breathe. Prepare properly for reading this book. Disconnected the phone, put a do not disturb sign on the door; grab your favorite decadent food and a bottle of chilled favorite beverage. You will be drawn into Delfina, you will become Jane Parker and you will be romanced by Nicolai. Come and let Harlequin Nocturne seduce you with a new series!

Today we have with us Katie Roberta Stevens, author of My Mother Killed Christ But God Loves Me Anyway

From the Back Cover:
Every person has her secrets. If Katie can forgive her mother and herself for theirs, readers of this book can certainly find it in their hearts to forgive their own transgressions. This deeply affecting memoir by a Catholic schoolgirl during the 1960s shares her inspiring journey from an abusive childhood with a schizophrenic mother to an adulthood of redemptive love. My Mother Killed Christ: But God Loves Me Anyway is a triumphant memoir detailing the life of Katie Murphy, a 1960s Catholic School girl struggling to keep the faith acquired at school in a home ruled by a mentally ill mother who believed she killed Jesus Christ. This life story is not divided into years, but into episodes capturing her family’s chaos, created by an absentee father and a mother frequently committed to a mental hospital. She and her four siblings are forced to shoplift food, toiletries and clothing to survive. Meanwhile, Katie's misguided search for parental love leads to an ongoing affair with a priest in high school, marriage to a man twice her age in college, and a twelve year affair with a married man in adulthood. She finally learns the truth about her childhood. Successful, safe and loved today, she lifts the veil of self-blame and anger to trace a path to true forgiveness. The author shares poignant proof that, with conviction, compassion, and truth, even the most damaging past can be transformed into a peaceful and meaningful present.

The Interview

Why did you decide to write your story?

I decided to write my story because turning 50 caused me to conduct a “mid-life” review and I felt ashamed of many things that I did. When I began writing, in my mind, I was writing a confession seeking forgiveness for the “sins” that I committed. In order to write my story, I had to finally examine my childhood thoroughly for the first time. This process allowed me to acknowledge what I had survived and enabled me to forgive myself. While I am heartily sorry for hurting others as a result of affairs, I think that, without extensive intervention, I was bound to end up in exactly the type of relationships I chose based on my childhood experiences. In other words, as far as relationships with me, I become my mother.
Yet, if another person dares to imply that I or a sibling failed in life, I instantly defend my family by stating that many adults were raised within a “perfect” family and they don’t have college degrees, teaching and coaching awards, and children with advanced degrees as we do. Also, my siblings are the most upbeat, optimistic and generous people you could ever know.

What were the most difficult and the easiest parts of writing it?

The most difficult part of writing my book was recalling my mother’s cruelty to me. I had to remove much of this to make my book more readable. An editor had told me that “the character of the mother was too cruel to be believable.” I laughed at this because my mother was not a character, but I took out some of the cruelest parts.

The easy parts to write were the sex scenes because my husband and I have a great love affair. At the same time, throughout my life, even though my brain knew when these situations were wrong, my heart and soul were so desperate for physical affection and allowed impulses to win over my intellect. I still have that deep need within me. Can you imagine being a child that has never been touched in a loving way? I could still write these sections passionately, today, because I clearly remember wanting to be held so desperately.

What has been the most rewarding moment since its publication?

The most rewarding moment was receiving 5 Stars from the prestigious MidWest Book Review and from Amazon.com and goodreads.com reviewers. I work as a grant writer ever day, which means I must regularly win writing competitions against writers across the nation to garner funding from the United States Department of Education. However, my dream was to be another kind of writer. Earning 5 Stars from anyone makes me feel as if I have realized this life goal.
I have to add that the most difficult moments since its publication have been people approaching me at the pool or in public to ask questions about it. I guess I should have expected this, but I am not a victim and have never felt like a victim. I don’t want sympathy. Children in our situation did not sit around saying, “Man, we’re having a tough childhood.” We played stickball, excelled in school, and kept going forward. If I have any advice for teachers or counselors, I would say that the minute someone felt sorry for us, they hindered our growth. Like the nuns who taught me, the adults who said, “Yeah, kid, you have it tough, too bad! You still have to perform!” are those that saved us.

Are you writing something new?

I have begun a new book that I hope will be very humorous.

Who are your favorite authors?

I don’t have favorite author because, as a former English teacher, I have read many great books. However, I do believe that Jodi Picoult does an excellent job of clearly telling a story that is relevant to today’s social issues.

 What is your favorite book?

One of my favorite books is The Kite Runner, but I also enjoyed Sarah’s Key and Water for Elephants. If a book doesn’t grab my attention with excellent writing in the first chapter, I toss it aside. I’ve been doing that a lot lately.

What is your favorite way to spend the weekend?

Since moving to Florida, I love to spend the weekend outdoors at the beach, pool, or golf course.

Tell us why we should read this book?

I hope you read my book because you want to be moved by what you read. So many books and movies leave me feeling empty. I want an emotional connection with characters. I hope you’ll find that opportunity in my story. Also, my book may enable you to gain perspective before judging others and before judging yourself. We are all on a journey of self discovery and there is a path to peace for all of us if we’re willing to forgive and find compassion for others. I’ve made mistakes, but I’ve also had some great accomplishments. Since publishing, so many people that I see every day have now shared their personal stories of triumph with me. Trust me; there is so much about each other that we don’t know.

Do you have a favorite quote? If so what is it?

My favorite quote is one that I paraphrased in my book. I first heard it spoken by a guest on Oprah. It went something like this: True forgiveness is when you can say to the person who wronged you, “Thank you for giving me the experiences that made me who I am today.” My mother made me strong and compassionate.

Do you have a web page?

I do have a web page at www.readkt.com. It is very rudimentary and still a work in progress.

The Review

* Disclosure: I received this book from a GoodReads Giveaway I won. It in no way influenced my review.

My Mother Killed Christ But God Loves Me Anyway was a difficult book to read. It is the author's story of growing up with a mentally unstable mother. It is very honestly written.  As such I would recommend it for mature readers. Ms. Stevens holds nothing back in writing of her memories of neglect, abuse, theft, sexual issues, and graphic mental breakdowns. That could make the book depressing, harsh and heartbreaking. What saves it are the hope, perseverance, the strong family ties between the siblings ,the kindness and guidance given by others.
In reading this we come to realize that we can make a difference in the life of a child, even if we have no children. And the importance not to miss the opportunity to do so. My Mother Killed Christ is also a story of forgiveness, not only of those who may have hurt us, but also of ourselves. It took me a bit to get through this book. I think most who read this will either be glued to it  or  will need to read, put down, go do something fun, comeback and read some more. There will be those who will not make it through as well as those who hate it. That is the reality with any book but more so with one that touches on such harsh issues. I can't say I enjoyed this book because it is not entertaining. Am I sorry I read it?  No I am not. It is well written. It is a book that will leave you feeling a lot of mixed feelings. It is a book you want to discuss with a good friend or in a therapy group.  I give it 4 Stars.

My Mother Killed Christ But God Loves Me Anyway is available on Amazon in both the Kindle and print version as well as at B&N in the print version.

Click for Giveaway Form

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Here are the rules for participating in this meme:
 Grab your current read
Open to a random page
Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I am going to choose sentences from 2 of the books I am offering in my giveaway and a third from the book I am reviewing..

The first is from Rock 'n' Roll is Undead By Rose Pressey.

Rock 'n' Roll is Undead (Veronica Mason, Book 1)

I hadn’t intended on that reaction, but it was beyond my control. His good looks would make anyone lose brain function.
“I’m here about the bass player. You need one?” He stood in front of Kitty and me. His voice smooth like melted chocolate.
I nodded, still unable to speak. It was like being thirteen-years-old all over again.
He smiled, exposing dimples on each cheek. No fangs that I saw. Was he human? Maybe I should’ve lifted his lips and checked for fangs, kind of like inspecting a horse’s mouth—perhaps used my tongue for that examination. What was wrong with me? Someone needed to toss me in a cold shower. Pronto.

Rock 'n' Roll is Undead (Veronica Mason Series, Book 1) (Kindle Locations 843-850).

The second comes from Voodoo Dues by Stephany Simmons.

Voodoo Dues (Lian and Figg #1)

“My worst fear,” she said. “The darkest possible scenario is that he's fallen in with a bokor and killed his brother.”

“Are we talking about Pierre being turned into a zombie here?” Figg said.

 Voodoo Dues (Kindle Locations 525-527).

And a final one from the book I am reviewing, A Fit of Hissy by Jeni Decker and Kat Nove.

A Fit of Hissy: a schlockumentary

These days I’m out of control and think everyone’s out to get me. Not because I’m doing drugs or drinking, but because I’m going through menopause. After a particularly disturbing incident, I looked up the symptoms and discovered there are twenty-seven of them. I’m writing this so I can stick it on the refrigerator door for The Remote Control Terrorist to read EVERY FUCKING DAY.
Here are some of the symptoms and how they are affecting a once sane woman. That would be me, people.

A Fit of Hissy: a schlockumentary (Kindle Locations 203-207).

From GoodReads:

A Fit of Hissy is a mélange of schlock, a cornucopia of wisdom; observational satire, short stories, delectable musings, and the occasional song parody.

My review:

In A Fit of Hissy you get glimpses of life from two old friends. By two old friends I mean that is what you feel when you read this book. You feel like you are having coffee with 2 old friends, just talking about different stuff. They tell us about relationships, autism, family, menopause and even politics. Everything is up for grabs and nobody is worried about being politically correct.  Nothing is too sacred to be laughed at. Which is fine with me. The way I see it you have 2 choices about life. You can cry every time something happens or you can look for the humor and laugh. I choose to laugh. Shit happening is a frequent visitor in my life. You get the feeling he has been hanging out with the authors too.  While reading this book you might get offended, you might not agree with everything and you will laugh. Because like I said it is glimpses of life from a couple of real people.  I enjoyed this book. I like these writers. They keep it real. They keep it humorous.
This book contains an excerpt of "Waiting for Karl Rove". An awesome book I reviewed a few weeks ago.   Click here to read the review and an interview

Waiting for Karl Rove is currently being offered in a giveaway on GoodReads.
