Thursday Themes

Theme Thursdays
Theme Thursdays is a fun weekly event that will be open from one Thursday to the next. Anyone can participate in it.

This week’s theme is

TREES(Plants/Greenery )

I am breaking the rules today, (I know - you are all surprised by that). I am still sick from the infusion so I hope I will be forgiven. It is just too difficult to search through the two print books I am reading to find the theme match tonight. So I am going to take two selections from books I have finished. One from the book giveaway I am hosting and the other from the book I just reviewed, (there is a fascinating interview with the author too). I hope you enjoy them!

Prisoner and Survivor (a zombie apocalypse novel) (The Survivor Chronicles)

Prisoner And Survivor (Book 2) by Brian Kittrell

After a few minutes, he found a nice, shady spot under the willow tree behind the house. He started digging. It wasn't until this point in his life he understood just how difficult digging a large, deep hole really was. He continued digging for hours until it looked suitable for Trudy to be laid to rest.

Kittrell, Brian. Prisoner and Survivor (a zombie apocalypse novel) (The Survivor Chronicles) (Kindle Locations 640-644). Late Nite Books.

Ghost on Black Mountain

Ghost on Black Mountain by Ann Hite

(This excerpt is from an advanced copy and is subject to change. The piece you read may or may not appear in the released version.)

The man stood at the edge of the woods just like he belonged there, like a brown tin photo from time gone by.

This photo was taken by me and belongs to me. It is not associated with the book or the author. I just thought it look almost like the scene.

I hope you enjoyed my picks. Please enter The Survival Chronicles giveaway and be sure to read the riveting interview from Ghost on Black Mountain author Ann Hite. Please leave me a comment so I can find yours!

Survivor Chronicles by Brian Kittrell -Giveaway

The Dying Times

The Dying Times Book 1
Brian Kittrell

The officer stepped back in after looking at the parts for a moment.
"I found it," he said as he returned to the front of the store.
"Why would anyone tear out someone's throat and carry it to a back alley?" Wayne asked.
"Well," the officer said, clearing his throat, "...it looks like someone or something was eating it."

"Eating it?" Pamela yelled. "You must be joking."
"No, ma'am, I'm not joking. It looks like something was eating the throat," the officer replied nervously.
Suddenly, a scream was heard from outside the gas station.

Kittrell, Brian The Dying Times (a zombie apocalypse novel) (The Survivor Chronicles) (p. 42). Late Nite Books.

Catch That Collie review by Junior.

On July 27th, I introduced you to my friend, author Tarrin P Lupo,(click the link above to read that post). Tarrin had written a book to help children learn how to take responsibility for a dog. He has been trying to raise the money to get the book to shelters across the country. He has 10 days left to make his goal and is short $100. I am trying to help him. I think the book is awesome. Here is what Junior said about the book:

Catch That Collie: A tale about becoming a responsible pet owner

"I really like the dog book. I really like the picture when the collie was excited to get a forever home. I learned a lot about dogs. I have a black dog we adopted. Her name is KC. I learned black dogs are least likely to find a home. That makes me sad. I love KC. She is the best black dog ever. I don't know why people don't like black dogs. I know dogs need food and water like I do. I know they like to play, (me too). I learned how important it is for them to have exercise. I also learned they are sad if they are alone.  I was sad for Raja when he ran away to find Marcie. I was worried he wouldn't find his way home. It was good he had his tag with his address. Adopting a dog is a big deal but this book helps you know everything to do. You should buy this book if you are going to adopt a dog. And if you can pick a black dog. They are really fun! They will lick you a lot because they are happy dogs."

So please think about it. If you would like to help Tarrin or learn more please click the widget on the side. It will take you to the site and you can even hear Tarrin read the book. Thanks!

Please leave a comment. Junior and I love to hear from you.

Teaser Tuesday - The Hall brothers and Natasha Larry

Sorry my Tuesday Teaser is going up a bit late. We are having an autism fun day at my house. So far my 4 year old has only flashed 3 of my neighbors while screaming.

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading Pick a page and a couple of teaser sentences from that page to share.

*  All of the books below I received from the authors with a request to review.  The promise of a good review was neither sought or promised. No compensation other than a copy of the book to be reviewed was offered or received.*

My first teaser is from The Bond Conqueror by Phillip Hall and A. C. Hall. There is a lot of action in this book. Yes I am still reading it - life is getting in my way of reading. I am getting there though and school is starting. *Huge smile*
The Bond: Conqueror

From Good Reads:
Charles Bryant seems to have it all. A college professor on the esteemed intellectual planet Academia 7, Charles is something of a celebrity thanks to his branding as “the Bounty Hunting Professor”. But his bounty hunting missions are more than just a gimmick. Charles has spent a decade of his life consumed with trying to track down the last man alive who caused the death of his wife. And now he may’ve found him.

Joined by his number one student Sean Varis and a grieving wife whose husband just may be one of the four worst villains in the galaxy, Charles embarks on a quest across the stars in search of this man, driven by his
need to exact revenge upon him. But as Charles and his allies soon learn, more is at stake than just revenge, as a dark organization has slipped through the shadows of the galaxy and quietly set the stage for their bloody unveiling.

With a rival professor trying to take him down back home, a powerful organization doing all they can to kill him and with every tough guy in the galaxy gunning for a piece of the legendary “Bounty Hunting Professor”,
Charles Bryant and his friends may find completing their mission means more than just locating one man. It means coming face to face with the malevolent force that wants to reshape the whole of the galaxy and living to tell the tale.

The excerpt I chose is located on page 163.

Thinking deeply wasn't among Harbinger's favorite things to do and he tossed the blood soaked coat down and then stood. He walked to the edge of the building and stretched, feeling better now that Isaac was long gone from the area. Harbinger closed his eyes and took a long, deep breath.
His eyes shot open, a scent on the air putting him straight into combat mode. He scanned the dark street below and saw them. Eight well armed, coordinated men, approaching the building fast. There was a ninth man among them, scrawny and clumsy, obviously a civilian.
The harbinger was instantly back into combat mode, all other thoughts gone from his mind as he studied the men below. As they prepared to breach the building Harbinger pulled out his knife and smiled.

The second is from a book I just started, Darwin's Children by Natasha Larry.

Darwin's Children (Volume 1)

From Good Reads:
Life can get pretty complicated for any seventeen-year-old girl, but for a home-schooled telepathic black girl trying to survive in a prestigious private school in small-town Jonesborough, Tennessee, it can be maddening – especially when her telepathic father keeps eavesdropping on her thoughts!

Jaycie Lerner’s family isn’t the usual mom-dad-kid setup. Jaycie’s mom’s MIA, but Allison, her personal live-in ‘trainer,’ is more than a mom, with her own special abilities, like being able to lift cars and run incredibly fast. And Jaycie’s godfather John is more than persuasive – he can literally convince anyone to do anything.

As far as the rest of the world’s concerned, Jaycie’s on the outside looking in. The townsfolk love Jaycie’s pediatrician father, but she doesn’t fit in with ‘normal’ kids, and she doesn’t really want to. Most of her free time is spent training to keep her telekinetic and telepathic powers under control. But there’s one thing she can’t control – and that’s her feelings, especially when her best friend Matt is nearby. If only he knew what she was truly capable of...

Everything seems to be status quo for Jaycie until she receives a cryptic message from a stranger and meets a very unusual girl new to Jonesborough. Then all hell breaks loose!

The excerpt I chose is located on pages 51-52
Jaycie blinked her eyes in surprise. "They would ask people to do something that is wrong? I thought angels were..." She stumbled, trying to think of a word to describe her preconceived notion. "Angelic," she finished lamely.
John laughed. "They have no concept of right or wrong. At least, notion the way we think of it. Like I said, they are a single-minded race. They have no qualms about asking a person to carry out any act, as long as it achieves their goal of restoring balance. And balance can be restored by any means necessary. They may want a child killed, or an elderly woman saved. To them, balance is good and imbalance is evil."
Jaycie looked at him in stunned silence and he sighed. "I wish your father weren't so hell-bent on your having a normal life. There is so much out there you have no idea about. Things you need  to know." He sighed again and looked above her head, seeming lost in thought.
"You can teach me," she reminded him as he looked back at her. She had so many questions but could only manage to ask one. "What should I do?"
John sighed for the third time. "Trust your intuition. It's one of your gifts. But most importantly, remember that they can't force anything on anyone. Angelic Guardians can never, for any reason, interfere with anything in the physical world. They can only ask people to carry out their goals for them. So, you always have a choice."

I hope you enjoy my choices. They are both good reads so far. Different from each other. I think you expect that from me by now.  Leave a comment and let me know where to find yours. If you are not part of the meme, please feel free to tell us where to find your blog. Also leave a quote from a book if you like.

Guest Post by Brian Kittrell for the Alaskan Book Cafe (Exclusive)

I am so excited to have Brian Kittrell as a guest today! Brian Kittrell is the author of the Survivor Chronicles series (The Dying Times, The War of the Dead, Prisoner and Survivor, and A World Forsaken) and has announced a new fantasy line of novels beginning in the fall of 2011, beginning with The Circle of Sorcerers. He enjoys telling stories, but his life's fulfillment and joy come from his wife and daughter. As you may know from a prior post I love the Survivor Chronicles! I hope you enjoy his post and will check out the links at the bottom. There is a surprise to be found there too!

Welcome Brian!

Title: The Journey Continues

When I started publishing in November, 2010, I was very much a hobbyist author who used writing as a means of stress relief and personal enjoyment. With a few sales that first month, I thought, "Hey, it would be cool if this would pay the cell phone bill." Then, as the months progressed, sometimes it would pay the mortgage. Every once in a while, the amount of money equaled the house note plus all of the utilities. It had been a fun, interesting ride. What happened next is what you would probably suspect: as the books continued to gain exposure and more and more people read them, several came forward who didn't like them. This continued for some time through the middle portion of the year, and it drove me into a rather dark place.

While I began with the assumption only a few people might check out my work each month, I had no idea that thousands upon thousands of people would. Before I knew it, almost 10,000 copies of the books had been distributed in one form or another (predominantly eBook format). Then, each book was torn apart by the critics. It made me question if I should even continue; with the recent successes, I decided to go ahead and continue writing since people were enjoying the stories, but it became more difficult to work on my projects with how many detractors were coming forward. So, I decided to make the first book in my zombie series free for two reasons: to reach new readers who would otherwise not pick up a new author and to give everyone a chance to try an extended sample to decide for themselves if they wanted to read the others. So far I feel that the strategy has been a good one - some people are picking up the book, reading it, and enjoying it, and the ones who don't like them can say, "Good thing it was free!" and never worry about it or the rest in the series again.

Of course, the future awaits, and the future is what we make of it. The first step for the future is to hire a professional editor for my future books. Though I've been generally pleased with my assistants through the first four books in the zombie series, now is a perfect time to go ahead and add that extra additional step into my publication workflow - someone who understands the business and knows what readers expect. Don't get me wrong: I love the stories I tell and so do many other people. For the future installments, I want a better chance at the vast majority of other people liking them, too.

The second is to make steps from my hobbyist inner self toward a professional writer, without the negatives that often come along with it. I want to remain a personable person, genuine and sincere, just with a more professional polishing of my work. I want the refinement without the narcissism. Above any other consideration, I don't want to be "that guy" who tries to shove my books down peoples' throats. I'm just not that kind of person, and, judging by the pool of relatively new authors popping up, there are plenty of others who are willing to perform that role.

In closing, I want to thank the fans for everything. Without them my little stories would have just vanished away into oblivion, but, no - the fans read the stories and propelled others to check them out. I was inspired by my successes and the kind words of others to continue the series, and I will soon have the final book of the zombie series completed (A World Forsaken) and the first in a fantasy series (The Circle of Sorcerers, for which I shall have professional editing performed). The Circle of Sorcerers is actually going to the editor tomorrow morning, so I should be off preparing it to be sent for now. My first year will have seen the publication of my first five novels, and it has been quite an interesting ride.

Follow My Blog Friday #59

Q. If you could write yourself a part in a book, what book would it be and what role would you play in that book?

I always wanted to be in Anne of Green Gables, as one of Anne and Diana's friends. From books I have read recently I want to be on a road trip with Kat Nove and Jeni Decker in Waiting for Karl Rove. Maybe as a stalker fan or blogger who meets them somewhere between Texas and Nevada. The possibilities for fun are endless.  Or in Rose Pressey's Larue Donavan Series as one of Larue's Ghoulfriends. Being a vampire in one of Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampire Series or Jaz Primo's Sunset Vampire Series would be cool. I like that their female vampires are strong women. Being in any of Molly Harper's books because she writes so funny. I just want to have fun. I could go on and on because, really, don't you imagine yourself in some role with every book you read?

Leave a comment and let me know where I can find yours. If you are not really participating in this meme on your blog but just came by to read my answer, then please leave your answer in my comments. I am interested in what you think and which book you have dreamed yourself in. I also enjoy visiting all the blogs.  I do go to each one and I always follow back. Have an awesome weekend!!

Thanks for coming by and don't forget to enter the giveaway, (Sorry but due to all the differing laws of each country, I had to make this US only), for the first two e books in the Sunset Vampires Series by Jaz Primo. You can enter at my site and at Books & Barks. Jenn is having some dental issues taken care of but she will be blogging soon. She does read your comments and visit back so if you stop there, show her some love. Today is the last day to enter! The links are here:
